The Ananda Center for the Arts proudly presents String, the premier guitar festival in Northeast Ohio. This inaugural festival of guitars assembles premier players and technicians from two continents for a weeklong musical journey.

Baroque Music Virtuoso Dieter Hennings performs and discusses music by the greatest lutenist from the Baroque era, Silvius Leopold Weiss. Learn more

With a conjoined understanding of their music, virtuoso Stephen Aron and soprano JoNell Aron present their diverse and vibrant blends of harmony, rhythm, and melody. Learn more

Great concerts and learning for the guitar aficionado

String provides an opportunity to hear, observe, and learn from an outstanding acoustic array of musical excellence encompassing a sundry of styles and eras to tantalize the senses.

Collaborating with local schools

Massillon native Randall Avers and Benoit Albert of Les Freres Meduses will be providing weeklong performances and workshops within the school districts of Stark County, Ohio.

Providing professional workshops and seminars

On Saturday, November 12 at the Massillon Museum and Sunday, November 13 at the Lincoln Theatre, workshops and seminars offering a variety of learning levels and experiences will be presented by the participants.

Stephen Aron Masterclass

Stephen Aron’s master class will address the fundamentals of refined music-making on the guitar through interaction with students and the standard repertoire. Topic such as sound-production, rhythm/meter, balance, legato, rubato, phrasing, stylistic considerations, and the use of color and articulation will come into play as we consider the specifics of each performance and work. Methods of practicing will be discussed and solutions to common problems will be addressed.

“Dust off your guitars” and bring them in. Benoit and Randall invite all guitarists, old hand or novice, to attend their workshop focusing on strategies and the use of modern technology to hone playing skills.

Goran Ivanovic & Andreas Kapsalis Workshop

12:00 P.M.–1:30 P.M.

The Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo master class consists of demonstrations of extended guitar techniques, their approach to composing, arranging and improvising. Andreas will focus on his unique ten finger tapping style and will lead us trough the endless possibilities in his original compositions and popular favorites.Goran will showcase his expertise in Balkan folk music and break down the complex rhythms in 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, and 11/8 time signatures. He will share his approach to accompaniment, improvisation and composition in odd time signatures.

Sunday, November 13, 2011

1:30 P.M.: Solo Performance by Dieter Hennings on baroque lute and the classical guitar.
3:00 P.M.: Closing performance by Stephen and JoNell Aron.

Sunday concerts will be at the historic Lincoln Theater. Doors will open a half an hour before each performance.
